Chobani, maker of popular Greek-style yogurt found in Kroger, Publix, Walmart and other grocery stores, is voluntarily pulling some of its product from store shelves after complaints from customers.

The company said yogurt cups with the code 16-012, expiration dates 9/11/2013 – 10/7/2013, are being removed. According to Food Safety News, customers have complained of a foul smell coming from sour yogurt, and some have claimed they have been sickened. The company told the publication the incidents were "isolated quality concerns."

A customer service website Chobani provided was not accessible at one point Wednesday. A phone number, 1-877-847-6181, was also busy during several attempts.

The yogurt maker was also responding Wednesday to numerous Facebook postings about the problem product, promising it will be “making this up” to them.

“We have not issued a recall,” the company said on Facebook. “We are, however, working with our retail partners to voluntarily remove and replace product that did not meet our rigid quality standards.”

According to the Economist, Chobani expects to sell more than $1 billion worth of its yogurt this year. The publication said Greek-style yogurt's "share of America's $6.1 billion market has risen from negligible when Chobani started (in 2005) to nearly half."
