South metro Atlanta leaders are expected today to announce a new hospital dedicated to care for those with cancer.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America plans to build a cancer hospital in Newnan that will create 500 jobs and generate $500 million in economic activity over the facility's first five years, organizers say.

It's expected to bring in thousands of cancer patients from throughout the Southeast to metro Atlanta.

CTCA facilities treat everything from lung to brain to stomach cancers.

"It's a destination hospital intended to serve people throughout the Southeast," said Jeff Dickerson, speaking about today's noon announcement at Newnan City Hall.

He said site selection will be revealed at the news conference. A time line for the hospital's construction was not disclosed.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America, which is based in Schaumburg, Ill., has hospitals in Arizona, Illinois, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.

"The objective is to get them within a short flight to anywhere in the nation," Dickerson said. "This fulfills that objective in the Southeast."
