Building activity up in South

The number of residential building permits issued in the South rose over last year's number at this time, according to the monthly report from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The region showed a 1.9 percent increase over last year, from 2.54 million to 2.59 million. The Northeast and Midwest regions showed drops, but the West showed a gain of 2.2 percent.
