Atlanta leads the country in growth of new car buying, according to Edmunds.com.

The automotive information company said Atlanta was the hottest market for new cars in the first half of 2011.

Atlantans registered 19,136 more new cars than they did in the first half of 2010, a 24 percent increase, the company said.

Other cities that saw a more-than 20 percent increase in new car registrations include Phoenix; Sacramento, Calif.; Salt Lake City; Birmingham, Ala.; and Charlotte, N.C. The smallest increases in new car registrations were in Detroit, New York City and Boston.

Nationwide, new retail car registrations have grown 14 percent, the company said.
