National rail service Amtrak said Thursday it plans to open an information technology center in Sandy Springs, where it will hire about 200 people over the next two to five years.

Atlanta is home to IT operations and innovation centers for many Fortune 500 companies and other big names, including General Motors, Panasonic and Home Depot. Amtrak said it also has IT facilities in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Wilmington, Del.

The new Amtrak IT service center will be located in the Concourse office complex, home to the King and Queen buildings, near I-285 and Ga. 400.

“The opening of this service delivery center strengthens our IT operations and allows us to deliver service more effectively and efficiently for our business and customers,” Jason Molfetas, Amtrak chief information officer, said in a news release. “Our employees must continue to have the best technology capabilities that provide quick access to information, link to critical processes and connect with customers in a rapidly evolving marketplace.”

Amtrak operates four long-distance service routes through Georgia to New York, including the Crescent line from New York to New Orleans through Atlanta.

Ridership of the publicly-funded rail service in Georgia dipped 6.9 percent in fiscal 2014 compared to the prior year. About 179,000 people boarded or disembarked Amtrak in Georgia in fiscal year 2014.
