AGL Resources, the parent of Atlanta Gas Light, began moving forward with its planned acquisition of an Illinois utility Tuesday, asking for the first of several approvals required to make the deal happen.

The company and Nicor, a natural gas utility outside of Chicago, filed a joint application with the Illinois Commerce Commission, that state's version of Georgia's Public Service Commission.

The filing asking for permission to reorganize Nicor into a part of AGL.

The $8.6 billion acquisition will make AGL the largest gas-only utility in the country, with 4.5 million customers in seven states.

The company's corporate headquarters will remain here. Its gas distribution headquarters will move to Illinois. Nicor will be its largest gas utility.
