Georgia Power crews are working to restore service Tuesday to the thousands of customers who were left without electricity due to the wintry weather conditions.

Freezing rain overnight brought down trees and power lines from the northern suburbs of metro Atlanta northward.

As of 7 p.m., about 164,000 customers had their power back, Georgia Power said. That left only another 29,000 still without power, primarily in northeast Georgia and northern metro Atlanta.

In the past 24 hours, service had been temporarily interrupted to approximately 196,000 customers statewide, the company said.

Georgia's electric membership cooperatives (EMCs) have also reported progress in restoring service to customers Tuesday.
