A Winder man has been charged with murder in the Friday night beating that led to his girlfriend's death, police said.

Around 8:15 p.m. Friday, Winder police officers responding to the intersection of Elm and Graham streets found 50-year-old Delores Holder unconscious and bleeding from the head. She was rushed to the hospital, and the man police believe to be her boyfriend, 59-year-old Frankie Lee Carter, was later arrested and charged with aggravated battery.

Winder police Lt. Chris Cooper said authorities were notified "late Saturday or early Sunday" that Holder had died, and the charges against Carter were upgraded to felony murder.

A possible motive was murky.

"All we could tell is that they were in some sort of argument and that Carter struck her with a blunt object, possibly picked up there at the scene," Cooper said. "A witness overheard or saw a portion of the argument."
