The Federal Aviation Administration has announced that it will close 149 air traffic control towers at smaller airports nationwide due to budget cutbacks associated with $85 billion in automatic budget cuts that hit the federal government on March 1.

The original list of possible closures issued on February 22 was 238 - so the FAA did take some out after appeals by local officials and communities.

It is important to note that the airports will remain open - this only deals with the air traffic control towers at those facilities.
