Class AAAAA No. 1 Pope was beaten by No. 3 Cambridge at the Area 7 meet at Kell. The Bears ended Pope’s six-year winning streak in area meets. Cambridge totaled 253 points to Pope’s 249.5. Creekview came in third with 228.5. It is the Bears’ first area championship in the program’s two-year varsity history.

Marietta upended Kennesaw Mountain in Area 4-AAAAAA 235-223 after five wrestlers won area titles for the Blue Devils.

Etowah won the Area 5-AAAAAA championship with 179.5 points to Roswell’s 160. Woodstock came in third and was followed by Walton and Lassiter.

In Area 4-AAAAA, Ola beat Whitewater 232-194.5. Union Grove came in third with 190 points and Starr’s Mill came in fourth with 145.

At the Area 6-AA meet, Lovett outpointed Westminster 214 to 179.5. Wesleyan took third, Calhoun took fourth and Greater Atlanta Christian came in fifth.

Southwest DeKalb took the Area 6-AAAAA crown by nipping Lakeside-DeKalb 162-159.5. Dunwoody took third, Arabia Mountain fourth and Stephenson fifth.

At the Area 5-AAA meet, Adairsville upset Sonoraville, which was ranked No. 5 last week. The Tigers took 200.5 points to Sonoraville’s 189.5.

Area 3-AAAA, Glenn Hills beat South Effingham 223.5 to 185.

The sectionals will be held this weekend throughout the state to determine what wrestlers will qualify for the state meets, which take place Feb. 13-15 at the Arena at Gwinnett.
