Here are some games of note in Class AA for Week 6.
Brooks County Trojans at Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jackets Nest, Thomasville
Records, rankings: Brooks County is 3-1 and No. 10 in AA; Thomas County Central is 3-1 and unranked in AAAAA.
Last meeting: Brooks County won 12-7 in 1983.
Maxwell's projection: Brooks County by 5
Notes: The Trojans reentered the rankings this week after edging then-No. 8 Dublin 13-10. They'd been ranked as high as No. 5 until a 37-7 loss to A-public's No. 1 Clinch County knocked them out of the rankings. Now that they've returned, they face another tough test in perennial power Thomas County Central. The Jackets — whose lone loss was to No. 3 Thomasville — are coming off wins over Cook and Monroe in which they outscored them 74-26. This rivalry renews after more than 30 years; the two teams played 16 times between 1960-83, with the Jackets going 10-6. The schools are just 29 mile apart.
Jefferson County Warriors at Harlem Bulldogs
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Bulldog Stadium, Harlem
Records: Jefferson County is 2-2, 2-0 in 4-AA; Harlem is 3-1, 2-0.
Last meeting: Harlem won 28-13 in 1971.
Maxwell's projection: Jefferson County by 9
Notes: The Warriors began the season ranked No. 8 coming of a 10-2 record last season but lost their first two games to Swainsboro and Washington County a combined 49-26. They've seen bulldozed through the first two games if their 4-AA schedule scoring 57 and 56 points against Butler and Josey while allowing just 22. Despite the tough start, they still have a realistic chance at their first region title since 2015. The Bulldogs are also off to a 2-0 start with double-digit wins over Glenn Hills (22-0) and Laney (35-13). They haven't won a region title since 1974, their only one. Their only loss was 33-31 to A-public No. 9 Aquinas to open the season, but they followed that with a 54-25 thrashing of A-public's then-No. 9 Washington-Wilkes. The Bulldogs could be a team on the rise under fourth-year coach Todd Booker, who last season guided them to their first winning season (7-4) since 2013 and first playoff appearance since 2001.
Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets at Bacon County Red Raiders
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Morris Johnson Stadium, Alma
Records: Jeff Davis is 4-0, 0-0 in Region 2-AA; Bacon County is 0-4, 0-0.
Last meeting: Bacon County won 35-21
Maxwell's projection: Jeff Davis by 11
Notes: The Jackets are 4-0 for the first time since 2007 and they're also seeking the 300th win for a program that began in 1950. Standing in their way of the landmark win is a Red Raiders team that is winless, but has beat them in seven straight seasons. This will be the 2-AA opener for both teams, and the Jackets will seek their first 5-0 since 1997, when they finished 10-2 and won 2-AA — their last region title — under Tom Hybi. It's worth noting that the Jackets finished 5-5 the last time they started 4-0. The Red Raiders haven't started 0-4 since 2008, when they lost their first six games on the way to a 2-8 finish. They've never won a region title.
Toombs County Bulldogs at Metter Tigers
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Metter
Records: Toombs County is 2-2, 0-0 in 2-AA; Metter is 4-0, 0-0.
Last meeting: Toombs County won 44-6 in 2017.
Maxwell's projection: Metter by 14
Notes: The Tigers are just 1-9 against the Bulldogs dating back to 1994, with their last win coming by a score of 43-21 in 2013. But this season is different under first-year coach Rodney Garvin, as the Tigers are 4-0 for the first time since since 2003, when they started 5-0 on the way to an 11-2 season and Region 3-A title. They've already eclipsed their win total from last season (3-7) and they're one win a way from matching their win total of the past two seasons combined. They've got their sights set on returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2015. The Bulldogs appear to have taken a step back from last year's 10-2 finish in which they notched their first playoff win since 2008. After starting 2-0 to slide in to the No. 10 spot in the rankings, they've lost two straight to Savannah Christian and Claxton of A-private.
