The No. 1-ranked Rome Wolves completed their second straight unbeaten season and extended their winning streak to 37 games on Friday. But they had already clinched the Region 7 title, so there was little drama in their 62-7 victory over Villa Rica.

There was, however, drama throughout the classification as xx teams clinched a region title on the season’s penultimate week. Starr’s Mill sewed things up in Region 3, Southwest DeKalb put it away in Region 5 and Banneker iced the Region 6 crown.

Starr’s Mill (6-3) won its showdown with Riverdale (7-2), beating the Raiders 45-22. Starr’s Mill has won five straight games and secured its third straight region title. Despite their lengthy success, the program had never before won three consecution region championships.

No. 9 Southwest DeKalb (9-0) upended defending Region 5 champion Arabia Mountain 21-20 to win its first title since 2009. It is the 17th region championship in the program’s proud history.

Banneker (8-1) beat North Springs 25-7 and won its first region championship. The Trojans are only three seasons removed from back-to-back winless seasons and have flourished in two seasons under coach Mario Allen.

Rome got five touchdowns in the first half from Jamious Griffin, who has 31 for the season and 106 for his career. The Wolves led 56-0 at the half and will take next week off to get ready for another championship run

No. 2 Buford got 104 yards and two touchdowns from Derrian Brown and rolled over Walnut Grove 61-0. Aaron McLaughlin threw for 127 yards and two touchdowns. The Wolves (7-2) need to beat Clarke Central in the season finale to secure the Region 8 championship.

In Region 1, Warner Robins can win the title next week with a win over Veterans.

In Region 2, Wayne County will host Ware County for the championship.

In Region 4, Dutchtown nailed down its championship last week. The Bulldogs blanked Eagle’s Landing 35-0 on Friday for their third shutout.
