Bainbridge’s Tyree Crump, a 6-3 junior combo guard who is committed to Georgia, is having a big junior year.

Crump is averaging 25.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He set the school’s single-game scoring mark with a 55-point explosion in an overtime win over Worth County in December. He made 19 of 31 attempts to break the former single-game record held by LaRay Davis, who scored 50 points in a game while starring for Bainbridge in the late 1980s.

Crump is one of three starters back from last season’s team that reached the Elite 8 under coach Rickey McCullough. Juniors DeVontae Jones and Trevon Shaw also average double figures for the Bearcats and play key roles.

The Bearcats have been to two Final Fours in McCullough’s nine seasons.

Bainbridge is 13-1 and ranked fifth in the AJC Class AAAA rankings. The Bearcats are at Seminole County on Tuesday.

The Mary Persons girls are off to a 13-0 start, despite not having a player taller than 5-9.

They do have Keke Calloway, though, and that goes a long way.  Calloway is a 5-8 power forward, who leads the Bulldogs in points (23.6) and rebounds (7.0). Calloway has signed with Mercer and is a part of coach Kurt Greene’s trip of stars.

Shooting guard Tyesha Davis, Mary Person’s tallest player at 5-9, and Asiana Almon make the Bulldogs go, Greene says.

“We have to stay out of foul trouble,” Greene said. “If any of those three get into foul trouble, we’re in trouble.”

That’s easier said than done. To combat their lack of height, the Bulldogs like to extend the court and apply pressure defense.

Mary Persons hosts Veterans on Tuesday in a battle of Region 4-AAAA unbeatens.
