Buford’s girls beat visiting St. Pius 3-0 in the second round of the Class AAAA state tournament last Friday. Annalea Stevens and Maria-Jose Ferreyros won in singles for the Wolves, while Abbey Mitchell and Savannah Whaley powered their way to a doubles victory to account for Buford’s three points. The Wolves, who also shut out Pickens in the opening round, await either Cartersville or Marist in the quarterfinals. St. Pius’ boys, on the other hand, are alive and well. They beat Whitewater then went on the road to defeat North Hall, setting up a showdown with Woodward in the last eight.
Dunwoody’s boys and girls made it through to the Class AAAAA second round last week. The boys blanked East Paulding 4-0 to improve their season record to 18-0. Andrea Ubezio and Brandon Gita picked up singles wins for the Wildcats, while both doubles teams (Matthew Moussouri and Will Munger, Daniel Bynum and J.T. Melton) got the job done. The Dunwoody girls shut out East Paulding 3-0 on the strength of singles victories by Audrey Benson and Paige Borcherding. Jaydra Von Behren and Jordon Kenter added a point in doubles. Round two will pit the Lady Wildcats against Riverwood, with Dunwoody’s boys taking on North Springs.
The Walton boys, who are seeded first out of Region 5-AAAAAA, kicked off their state tournament campaign by defeating Lambert 3-1 last week. Walton swept the doubles matches as Trevor Croyder and Crews Enochs prevailed at No. 1 and Jonathan He teamed up with Raymond Zhang to take care of business at No. 2. Francis Young put the winning point on the scoreboard for the Raiders at No. 3 singles. Next up for Walton is Peachtree Ridge with a spot in the quarterfinals at stake. Walton’s girls, meanwhile, have already cruised past Chattahoochee and Peachtree Ridge and will face Lambert in the quarters.
Among the local teams with both their boys and girls still in action are Greater Atlanta Christian, Lovett and Westminster. The Greater Atlanta Christian and Lovett girls will battle each other in the quarterfinals, while Lovett’s boys are going up against Pace Academy for a spot in the semis.
