Led by medalist Jack Larkin’s 3-under, the Marist boys won their third straight state golf championship in style on Monday.
Larkin, a senior who has committed to Georgia, made birdies on the final two holes and finished two strokes ahead of Jake Harpe of Spalding and Steven Fisk of Dutchtown. Larkin is the son of former UGA golfer Jack Larkin.
The War Eagles were 2-over as a team at Augusta’s Westlake Country Club and beat runner-up Columbus by 16. Marist also counted a 73 from Will Chandler, a 76 from Will Duma and a 78 from Kevin Jackson. Chandler, a sophomore, has also committed to play at Georgia.
Columbus got a 75 from Ben Womack, a 76 from Daniel Davis, a 77 from Nolan Miller and a 78 from Carson Cummings, but it wasn’t enough to catch Marist.
All the state tournaments were played in the Augusta area on Monday. In the other classifications:
Class AAAAAA boys: At Champions Retreat, Peachtree Ridge edged Roswell and Johns Creek by three shots to win its first championship since 2009. The Lions got a bogey-free 5-under 67 from Charles Huntzinger, who edged Zach Healy of Norcross by two shots for medalist honors. Peachtree Ridge also got a 76 from Mike Collins, a 78 from Steven Payne and a pair of 79s from Davis Cook and Kevin Kim.
Roswell got a 72 from Spencer Haigwood, a 74 from Jonathan Martin and a 75 from Zach Zwitter. Johns Creek counted a 72 from Billy Johns, a 75 from Hayden Poole and a 77 from T.J. Boyd.
Class AAAAAA girls: At Gordon Lakes, Lambert won its second straight championship, finishing 8-over as a team and beating runner-up Walton by 15 shots.
Class AAAAA boys: At Bartram Trail, Greenbrier beat Lakeside-Evans in a playoff after the two tied at 3-over. Lakeside's Hunter Dunagan was medalist with a 64, including a 30 on the back nine. Winston Mershad of North Atlanta shot 68 and helped his team finish a strong fourth. Gainesville, which was trying for a third straight title, wound up third thanks to Lawson King's 69, which placed him third.
Class AAAAA girls: At Jones Creek, Cambridge had too much depth for the rest of the field and won by 25 over Gainesville. The Bears were led by medalist Sabrina Long with a 1-under 71, Rachel Dai with a 75 and Tiffany Elam with a 77. Megan Sabol shot a 73 for Lakeside-Evans.
Class AAAA girls: At Waynesboro Country Club, Amy Clark's 7-over 79 paced Columbus, which defeated Dalton by two shots to win its first championship since 2006. Brett Beavers added an 83 for Columbus. Dalton got a pair of 86s from Mable McKone and Ashleigh Peters.
Class AAA boys: At Belle Meade Country Club, North Oconee beat rival Oconee County by two shots for the championship North was led by David Mackey with a 2-under 70 and Akshay Patel with a 75. Oconee County's Jackson Keene shot an even-par 72. Christopher Harris of St. Pius was medalist with a 3-under 67.
Class AAA girls: At Waynesboro Country Club, medalist Gracie Henderson shot 73 and Nicole Henderson shot 84 to pace Blessed Trinity to its fourth state championship and first since 2009. The Titans shot 245 and beat North Oconee, led by Crocket Floyd's 78, by four strokes.
Class AA boys: At Applewood Golf Course, Westminster defended its title with a team score of 1-under 287, edging Greater Atlanta Christian by one shot.
Keller Harper led the Wildcats with a 4-under 68 and Keller Austin and Hunter Bremer each had 73 and Patrick Bridges shot a 75. Harper birdied the final hole and holed out for an eagle on the 16th hole.
The medalist was Greater Atlanta Christian’s Steffen Smith, who had six birdies in shooting a 5-under 67. Ben Shipp shot 70, Chris Moss had a 76 and Conner Conkel shot 77.
Chase Cole of Dade County tied Harper for second place with a 68.
Class AA girls: At Pointe South Golf Course, medalist Katie Dalton shot a 3-over 75 and Layne Carter added a 79 to help Vidalia defend its state title. The Indians have won three of the last four championships.
Class A Private boys: At Forest Hills, senior James Clark helped Brookstone win its fifth straight state championship. Clark, who has signed with Georgia Tech, shot a 4-under 68 to repeat as state medalist. His brother, Mercer Clark, shot a 76, with Jack Mize at 78 and Connor Todd at 79. Athens Academy and Holy Innocents' tied for second, with Sam Asbury shooting 69 for Holy Innocents'.
Class A Private girls: At Goshen Plantation, Darlington's Hanna Grevelius shot 75 and Hannah Mae Deems shot 78 to defend its title.
Class A Public boys: At Forest Hills, Justin Hickman shot 75 and Lanier Guest shot 76 to help Gordon Lee win the title by 26 shots over Trion. Hickman was medalist and Guest tied for second with Harrison Mohr of Lincoln County.
Class A Public girls: At Goshen Plantation, medalist Akynn Trudnak shot an 81 to lift Commerce to its first championship. Jordan Booker of Schley County was the individual runner-up with an 83.
