The Decatur girls won their seventh straight game on Friday and appears ready to challenge St. Pius in Region 6-AAA.
The Bulldogs blasted Cedar Grove 73-24 and improved to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in the region. They haven’t lost since dropping three in a row in early December to Class AA power Greater Atlanta Christian, defending state champion St. Pius and defending Class AA champion Wesleyan. The Lions lost a tough four-point decision at St. Pius and a five-point game at Wesleyan.
Decatur is a balanced team. The Bulldogs have two girls who average in double figures – Jayla Morrow (12.9) and Kori Anderson (10) – but they have three others who average more than seven points per game in Jahmee Reeves (7.8), Kayla Thomas (8.2) and Janay Williams (8.3).
Decatur has a rematch with Woodward Academy on Jan. 17. The Bulldogs beat Woodward 57-54 on Dec. 3. The Dogs have a return game at home against St. Pius on Jan. 28.
North Oconee girls start new region streak
No. 9 North Oconee had its 34-game region winning streak broken this week, but began a new one on Friday night against its county rival.
The Titans (12-3, 5-1) beat Oconee County 62-42 in the Coaches vs. Cancer series. North Oconee did it thanks largely to the effort of all-state candidate Ginny Channell, who scored 21 points despite not playing the second quarter because of foul trouble. Abby DeFabio scored 15 points and Carmen Williams added 13.
North Oconee was coming off a 57-41 loss to Franklin County in Danielsville, where the Lions (11-4) are undefeated. Franklin now leads Region 8-AAA. The two teams play again on Jan. 28 in Watkinsville.
White County, North Hall girls improve positions
The jousting for position in Region 7 behind the Buford girls continued on Friday. White County improved to 10-2 and North Hall improved to 10-3 with wins.
White beat East Hall 39-34 behind a 12-point, eight-rebound effort of Paige Thomas. The win improved the Warriors to 3-2 in the league. North Hall had a 61-60 win over Dawson County thanks to 25 points and 11 rebounds from Sydney Cleveland. The Trojans improved to 3-1 in the league and gave Dawson its third region loss, despite 25 points from Sheyenne Seabolt.
Oconee boys nip rival North
The Oconee County boys won the other half of Rival Night. The Warriors beat North 61-59 when Connor Johnson made a pair of free throws inside the last 10 seconds. Johnson scored six of his 11 points in the fourth quarter.
