Junior Jamie Glover scored late in the first overtime period and Pope held on for a 2-1 upset victory against eighth-ranked Parkview on Wednesday in the first round of the Class AAAAAA girls soccer playoffs.
The victory made Pope the only No. 4 seed to reach the second round in AAAAAA and marked a turnaround for the Greyhounds (12-6-1), who had lost four of their previous five matches. Parkview, which finished in a three-way tie for first place in Region 8 but got the No. 1 seed on a tiebreaker, won the state championship in 2013 and has won eight titles overall, the most of any team in the highest classification. Sixth-ranked Grayson was the only Region 8 team to win its first-round match, beating Milton 2-1.
After a scoreless first half, Parkview took a 1-0 lead early in the second. Pope's Kathryn Schreck tied the score 1-1 with a goal with about 24 minutes remaining in regulation.
Here are some of the other highlights from first-round action in AAAAAA, AAAAA and AAAA. The three lower classes will play most of their first-round games on Friday.
*Region 6 woes: Region 6-AAAAAA, made up primarily of Forsyth and north Fulton schools, entered the state tournament with four teams in the top five in the most recent EurosportScoreboard.com rankings, but only one survived the first round. West Forsyth, the region champion but lowest ranked of the four teams at No. 5, moved on with a 3-1 victory against Duluth. Second-ranked Johns Creek (the No. 2 seed) lost 2-1 to Mill Creek; third-ranked Lambert (the No. 4 seed) lost 2-1 to North Gwinnett; and fourth-ranked South Forsyth (the No. 3 seed) lost 3-0 to Collins Hill. West Forsyth will host Campbell in the second round.
*No. 1 seeds fall: Parkview was one of five No. 1 seeds overall to lose its first-round match. The 2-AAAAA champion, Houston County, was knocked out by Effingham County 2-1, but the region got its revenge when Lakeside-Evans beat 3-AAAAA winner Glynn Academy by the same score. Region 1-AAAA champion Thomas County Central was eliminated by Eagle's Landing 4-0, and 7-AAAA champ Heritage-Catoosa was knocked out by Chamblee 6-0. Overall, the No. 1 seeds were 19-5, and the No. 2 seeds posted a 14-9 record.
*Ranked teams cruise: In Class AAAA, higher-seeded teams had just a 10-6 record, but ranked teams were for the most part immune from the upsets. The only top-10 team to lose its first-round match was No. 10 North Oconee, which lost to No. 6 Woodward Academy 5-1. The other eight ranked teams - No. 1 Marist, No. 2 St. Pius, No. 3 Whitewater, No. 4 Buford, No. 5 Grady, No. 7 Veterans, No. 8 Pike County and No. 9 Chamblee - won their games by a combined score of 59-0. Matchups between ranked AAAA teams in the second round include St. Pius at Veterans and Woodward Academy at Pike County.
*Looking ahead: The most high-profile matchup in the second round will come in Class AAAAAA when defending state champion Grayson takes on 2014 champion Harrison in Kennesaw. Grayson defeated Harrison 2-1 in the quarterfinals on its way to the title last year, ending Harrison's 39-match winning streak. On Wednesday, No. 6 Grayson (13-3) advanced past Milton, and Harrison (13-3-1) cruised past Colquitt County 10-0.
