Updated: Rockdale football coach Baldwin dies at age of 45

Jamie Baldwin, the head coach of Rockdale County’s football and track-and-field teams, died Saturday, the school’s sports Twitter account posted. He was 45.

Baldwin had been suffering from bronchitis for the past week, according to the Rockdale Citizen.

Baldwin was an Alabama native who was a four-sport athlete at Clarke County High. He joined the Army out of high school and served in Operation Desert Storm.

Baldwin had been stationed in Savannah for a time, got a degree at Armstrong State University and transitioned into teaching and coaching. In 2012, Baldwin made a mark at Johnson High of Savannah, where as head coach he led the 53-year-old school to its first and only football playoff victory.

Baldwin came to Rockdale County as a defensive coordinator and was promoted to head coach in 2017.

Rockdale’s three high schools were the last in metro Atlanta to return to summer conditioning last week because of the school district’s COVID-19 concerns. Rockdale High’s Monday workouts have been canceled.

Baldwin is the third Georgia head football coach to die this offseason. Irwin County's Buddy Nobles succumbed to a months-long battle with cancer at age 53 in January. Mountain View's Rob Kellogg  died in April. He was 58.
