A pair of second-ranked teams lost last week and dropped in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution football rankings, but not much changed overall as the previous Top 10 teams went 40-6.

In Class AAAAA, Houston County (6-1) dropped five places to No. 7 after losing to previous No. 7 Jones County (6-1) 24-17 in Region 2. Jones moved to No. 6. Mays (7-0), the 2014 state runner-up, is now No. 2 behind defending champion Northside-Warner Robins (7-0).

Previous No. 9 Ware County (5-2), which was upset by unranked Effingham County 24-21, is out for first time since November, 2012, a streak of 40 weeks.

Northgate (7-0) is in the rankings for the first time this season. Coach Tommy Walburn got his 100th victory in Northgate's 68-0 victory over Forest Park. Northgate has outscored its opponents 275-20.

In AA, former No. 2 Fitzgerald (6-1) dropped to No. 7 after losing to previous No. 10 Brooks County 21-17 in a Region 1 game. Brooks (6-2) is now No. 8.

Macon County (5-2) is back in the rankings at No. 10, replacing Union County (7-1), which lost its first game last week 49-3 to new No. 4 Rabun County (7-1).

Jackson (5-2) replaced Peach County (6-2) in the AAA rankings after beating Peach 3-2. Jackson has spent only four weeks in the rankings since 2009, and that includes one earlier this month after an upset of Westside-Macon that was followed by losing to Spencer.

Clinch County (6-1) jumped into the Class A rankings at No. 5 after a 30-16 victory over previous No. 5 Turner County (6-1), which fell to No. 7. Charlton County (5-1) dropped out despite winning.

The AAAAAA and AAAA rankings remained the same.

This week, three games match ranked teams. They are No. 9 Peachtree Ridge at No. 8 Norcross (AAAAAA), No. 8 Sandy Creek at No. 3 Woodward Academy (AAAA) and No. 10 Landmark Christian at No. 3 Eagle’s Landing Christian (A).

Three weeks remain in the regular season.
