Hard to believe, but half the regular season is already in the books.
That means it’s OK to start thinking about the playoffs.
Playoffs?
So without further apology, here’s a look at how the different regions are stacking up as most leagues begin to get ready for region play.
Region 1: Unless Warner Robins decides to play its Lazarus card, first place in this league should be determined when Bainbridge travels to Thomas County Central on Oct. 21.
Region 2: Here's a fun fact. This five-team region has combined for three wins through the first five weeks. Two of them belong to Ware County, which is the best of class.
Region 3: First place in this fun little league should be settled this week when Starr's Mill plays at Griffin. So far it's been Griffin's unstoppable offense (averaging 51 points) that has stood his region on its ear. Riverdale will likely be involved in the conversation, too.
Region 4: Stockbridge is the favorite and the championship may be determined when the Tigers host Jones County on Oct. 28. Stranger Things have happened. This region has two other very good teams in Woodland and Locust Grove, either of them capable of pulling an upset. Plus, Dutchtown and Ola are solid, which makes this a very deep, respectable league.
Region 5: Arabia Mountain has stepped to the front of the league. Those nipping at the Rams are Southwest DeKalb and Miller Grove, which plays Arabia Mountain this week.
Region 6: First place in this league should be settled this week when Carver plays at Grady on Saturday. Grady has the better resume of wins (Woodward Academy) and is scoring at will.
Region 7: Carrollton, Kell and Rome are the three big dogs in this extremely tough league. All three are ranked team and they will determine the order of finish. Kell has a leg up because the Longhorns have already beaten Rome. Carrollton hosts Rome this week, which makes it a must-win game for the Wolves. Carrollton and Kell play on Oct. 21.
Region 8: No. 1 Buford is the team to beat. The real race may be for second place. Clarke Central, which plays Buford this week, is the front-runner for the second spot after its win over Cedar Shoals. But Loganville is quietly 4-1 and Flowery Branch can't be overlooked.
