This year’s contest between Parkview and Brookwood wasn’t even close. Panthers quarterback Jack Chambers made sure of that.
Chambers had a monster first half, Parkview took a big lead fast and then held on for a 48-9 win at Brookwood. It was the Region 8-AAAAAA opener for both teams.
The Panthers (3-0, 1-0) scored on their first five possessions to take a 34-3 lead into halftime. By that point, Chambers had already thrown for 343 yards and four touchdowns and also rushed for a touchdown. He finished the game 18 of 23 passing for 396 yards and added a team-high 50 yards rushing as well as a second-half rushing touchdown.
“Jack Chambers leads the way for us,” Parkview coach Eric Godfree said. “He’s worked hard to get to the point to be the good passer that he is and he’s got great receivers out there and a good offensive line out there protecting him.
“Our kids played hard.”
Chambers spread the ball around, with each of his four touchdown passes going to different receivers. Jaylen Askew caught a 65-yard touchdown pass for the game’s first score. His other touchdown passes were to Garrett Fowler (50 yards), Tyler Fleetwood (40 yards) and Justin Long (24 yards).
With the game out of hand, the Panthers kept their foot on the gas in the second half. They forced the Broncos into a three-and-out on Brookwood’s opening drive, then Chambers ran for a 4-yard touchdown to give Parkview a 41-3 lead. Keeping with the spirit of the rivalry, the Panthers stuck it to Brookwood with an ensuing onside kick and recovered it.
The Panthers then scored for the final time on a 6-yard run by Deion Slade. At that point, they benched the starters.
Brookwood (0-3, 0-1) scored its only touchdown at the end of the third quarter when defensive lineman Shane DeFrietas fell on the ball in the end zone after a Parkview failed snap on a punt attempt.
Long led the Panthers with 108 receiving yards on five catches, followed by Fleetwood (87 yards, five catches) and Askew (86, three). Slade added 35 rushing yards.
