Brooks County and Shiloh won final appeals Wednesday to change regions beginning in 2020-21, and for Shiloh, that means a move out of the highest classification.

Brooks County, a Class AA football finalist this weekend, was approved by the GHSA's executive committee to shift to Region 2-A from Region 1-A beginning next season. The move down into Class A was determined last month, but Brooks preferred the more eastern region with Clinch and Irwin over the one with Pelham and Mitchell County to the west.

Meanwhile, Shiloh's winning appeal means that the Generals will go from the originally assigned Region 4-AAAAAAA to 8-AAAAAA to join fellow Gwinnett County schools Buford, Central Gwinnett, Dacula and Lanier.

That leaves Region 4 in the highest class with only five schools - Brookwood, Grayson, Newton, Parkview and South Gwinnett. Region 8 in the highest class also has five schools. Region 1 again will have only four.

Schools losing final appeals to move down in class or to another region on Wednesday were Blessed Trinity, Dalton, Ware County, Wayne County and Woodward Academy.

The executive committee ratified alignment for 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Johns Creek schedules road trip to Don Bosco Prep

Johns Creek will travel to New Jersey in 2020 to play that state's most prominent football program, Don Bosco Prep, on Sept. 4. Johns Creek coach Matt Helmerich was on the staff at St. Thomas Aquinas when that Florida program played Don Bosco in 2012 and 2014. Don Bosco, a 15-time New Jersey champion, won those games. "Third time's a charm," Helmerich said. Johns Creek has played four out-of-state teams the past two seasons. Those include nationally recognized St. John's of Washington and Jones of Orlando.
