The No. 1 and No. 2 teams in Class AA were beaten last week when Callaway and Hapeville Charter went down. That is the 16th time since 1982, when the Atlanta Journal and Atlanta Constitution merged their sports departments and began publishing one football poll, that No. 1 and No. 2 have fallen during the same week. It's the first time since 2017, when No. 1 Clinch County lost to Brooks County and No. 2 Macon County lost to Irwin County in Class A. In 2016, it happened to two teams in the same region when No. 1 Houston County, featuring Jake Fromm, lost to No. 3 Lee County while No. 2 Northside of Warner Robins lost to No. 5 Valdosta in 1-AAAAAA. Five of the previous 15 No. 1 teams bounced back to win state titles. Those were 1982 Palmetto, 1994 Thomas County Central, 2006 Peach County and 2006 Lincoln County and 2017 Clinch County. None of the No. 2 teams have won state titles.
