Teams ranked No. 1 in the AJC/GHSF Daily rankings are 68-4 this season. The .944 winning percentage is the second best in the regular season over the past 10 years for No. 1 teams and eighth-best since 1982, when AJC rankings began, replacing the separate Atlanta Journal and Atlanta Constitution polls. In 1988, the four No. 1 teams went 40-0. There were only four classifications then. Those No. 1 teams were Valdosta (AAAA), Stephens County (AAA), R.E. Lee (AA) and Clinch County (A). Valdosta and Stephens County lost in the playoffs, while R.E. Lee and Clinch won state titles. The four No. 1 teams that lost this season were Eagle's Landing Christian (A private) to Pace Academy on Aug. 24, remained No. 1; Grayson (AAAAAAA) to Bergen Catholic of New Jersey on Aug. 31, replaced by Colquitt County; Clinch County (A public) to Irwin County on Sept. 14, replaced by Irwin; and Hapeville Charter (AA) to Allatoona on Oct. 12, remained No. 1.
