Lee Chomskis, who won 101 games and two region titles in 13 seasons at Vidalia, is the new head football coach at Lincoln County.

Chomskis spent much of his childhood in Lincolnton and was an assistant coach at Lincoln County when the Class A power won its most recent state titles in 2005 and 2006 under coach Larry Campbell.

‘’It’s an incredible program, and I grew up in Lincolnton,’’ Chomskis said in a press conference Wednesday at Vidalia. ‘’Larry Campbell was my Little League baseball coach, so I have a lot of roots there. My grandmother was there. My mother was homecoming queen there. ... So there’s a lot of family history and tradition.’’

Chomskis is a nephew of Dan Pitts, a Lincolnton High graduate and former all-state player who would become the state’s all-time winningest high school coach at Mary Persons until Campbell beat his record. Chomskis also is a nephew of Lincolnton native Tommy Guillebeau, a former GHSA executive director.

Lincoln County is seeking to return to its glory days under coach Campbell, who led the school to 13 state titles before retiring after the 2013 season. Lincoln County is coming off a 9-3 finish, its best record since 2012, but Michael Pollock stepped down in December after two seasons as head coach.

Chomskis, a graduate of Westside High in Augusta, came to Vidalia in 2007 and fashioned a 101-45 record with region titles in 2012 and 2014. He coached 17 all-state players. Chomskis led Vidalia to a school-record eight straight playoff appearances through the 2019 season, when the Indians finished 7-4. He has coached 25 players who’ve gone on to play college football, among them Nate McBride at Georgia and Lakia Henry at Ole Miss.

“I’m excited about the opportunity but also heartbroken to be leaving here,’’ Chomskis said in press-conference audio provided by Vidalia Communications Inc.

Chomskis’ hiring was approved Tuesday evening at a Lincoln County school board meeting.
