The final week of the regular season is here. This will be the last tuneup for teams with state title aspirations before the playoffs begin on May 2. Be sure to check back next week for my annual playoff predictions.
Here are the latest AJC rankings.
As the postseason nears, let’s take a look at four of the state’s top teams — two from the boys’ side, two from the girls — and see how they’re doing at this point in the season.
Roswell Hornets (11-3)
Upcoming matches: vs. Northview (7-8) on Wednesday; at Etowah (11-5) on Friday.
Notes: The Hornets — ranked No. 6 in 6A-7A — are on a five-game win streak that includes victories over No. 5 Johns Creek and No. 8 Walton, which came 7-6 in four overtimes. The Hornets are 3-0 in overtime games, including wins over No. 9 Cambridge (three overtimes) and A-5A's No. 8 GAC.
Blessed Trinity Titans (14-2)
Upcoming matches: at 6A-7A's No. 8 Walton (12-4) on Tuesday.
Notes: The Titans are ranked No. 3 in A-5A. Last week, they lost 11-5 to No. 8 GAC, which snapped a 12-game win streak. They'll try to avoid backing into the playoffs on a losing streak, which won't be easy with a top-10 opponent from the highest classification. Notable wins include No. 10 Wesleyan and 6A-7A's No. 4 Lassiter and No. 10 Etowah.
West Forsyth Lady Wolverines (14-3)
Upcoming matches: vs. Roswell (9-5) on Friday.
Notes: The Lady Wolverines are ranked No. 3 in 6A-7A and have won nine of their last 10 games, with the loss coming 23-7 to No. 1 Milton. Their other losses were to No. 9 Alpharetta and to Tennessee's Baylor School, with the latter coming in overtime. Notable wins include No. 4 Cambridge and A-5A's No. 4 Starr's Mill and No. 5 McIntosh.
McIntosh Lady Chiefs (9-6)
Upcoming matches: at No. 4 Starr's Mill (14-2 on Thursday; vs. Pope (10-5) on Saturday.
Notes: The Lady Chiefs are ranked No. 5 in A-5A, and while their record doesn't scream "we're a top five team," they beat No. 7 Marist on April 10. They've also challenged themselves with a tough schedule, with notable opponents including No. 1 Blessed Trinity, No. 2 Wesleyan, No. 3 Kell, No. 4 Starr's Mill and 6A-7A's No. 3 West Forsyth.
