To this point in the lacrosse season, we have taken a look at four of the state’s top teams — two from the boys’ side and two from the girls’ — and checked in on how they’re doing at this point in the season.
This will be the final week we do that, as teams are currently jockeying for seeding in the upcoming state tournaments, which begin May 1. Area qualifiers end tomorrow, so check back on Tuesday for my annual playoff predictions for all four state tournaments.
Below, for the final time this year, are four featured teams for the week. Moving forward, we will be discussing the tournament.
Boys
Centennial Knights (11-5)
Upcoming matches: vs. Memphis University (7-4) on Friday; vs. Starr's Mill (9-5) on Saturday
Notes: The Knights — ranked No. 4 in 6A-7A — play the No. 3 team in Tennessee in Memphis University, followed by Starr's Mill to close out the regular season. Both games are at Lassiter as part of the Legacy Cup. Notable wins include No. 2 Roswell, North Carolina's No. 20 Charlotte Catholic, Tennessee's No. 7 Christian Brothers, A-5A's No. 2 Lovett and No. 9 Buford. All losses came to ranked teams — North Carolina's No. 3 Lake Norman, No. 3 Lassiter, No. 1 Lambert, No. 8 North Gwinnett and A-5A's No. 1 Westminster.
Pace Academy Knights (12-4)
Upcoming matches: Regular season over
Notes: A-5A's No. 5 Knights ended their season on Thursday with a 16-3 win over Union Grove to get back on the winning track after losing 10-3 to No. 1 Westminster seven days prior. Notable wins include No. 6 Woodward Academy and No. 7 Marist. Their losses were to unranked North Paulding, No. 1 Westminster, No. 2 Lovett and No. 4 Fellowship Christian.
Girls
Alpharetta Lady Raiders (10-6)
Upcoming matches: at Baylor (14-2) on Saturday
Notes: Baylor of Chattanooga is the No. 4 team in Tennessee and will serve as the final tuneup for 6A-7A's No. 4 Lady Raiders before the state tournament. Notable wins include No. 3 Johns Creek, Tennessee's No. 11 Hutchison and Ohio's No. 25 Mason. Losses include No. 1 Milton, Florida's No. 10 Hagerty, Virginia's No. 14 Potomac School, Ohio's No. 3 New Albany and No. 8 Cambridge.
Wesleyan Lady Wolves (13-4)
Upcoming matches: Regular season over
Notes: The Lady Wolves, who are ranked No. 5 in A-5A, closed out the season with a 22-7 win over North Oconee, which extended the team’s win streak to 11. Notable wins include No. 4 Lovett, No. 7 Westminster, No. 8 GAC and No. 9 McIntosh. Their four losses were to No. 1 Blessed Trinity, 6A-7A’s No. 3 Johns Creek, No. 10 Chattahoochee and unranked Mountain View.
