Welcome to the first weekly briefing of GHSA lacrosse for the 2018 season. The latest AJC rankings, which were released on March 14, have Lambert in 6A-7A and Lovett in A-5A as the No. 1 teams on the boys' side while Milton (6A-7A) and Blessed Trinity (A-5A) headline the girls' side.
With this being the first brief, let’s take a look at the teams currently ranked No. 1:
Lambert Longhorns (8-0)
Upcoming matches: vs. Chattahoochee (2-6) on Thursday; at No. 6 Johns Creek (8-1) on Saturday.
Notes: The Longhorns were last year's runners up to Lassiter and appear to be in full redemption mode, as demonstrated by their perfect start. Notable wins thus far include 14-5 over A-5A's No. 4 Blessed Trinity and 15-4 over No. 2 Centennial. The Longhorns represent the lone loss for both teams. Their opponent on Saturday, Johns Creek, reached the second round of last year's state tournament.
Lovett Lions (6-0)
Upcoming matches: at East Paulding (5-4) on Monday (score not reported); at Lassiter (4-3) on Saturday.
Notes: What makes the Lions' record so impressive is 1) all but one game — an 11-5 win over 6A-7A's No. 10 Cambridge — has been played on the road, and 2) all but one win has come against ranked teams. Six of their seven games have been on the road and they're in the midst of a six-game road trip. When it concludes, however, they'll play seven consecutive home games before their regular season finale at Allatoona. They've also beaten No. 3 Kell, No. 5 Marist, No. 8 Wesleyan and 6A-7A's No. 5 Lassiter.
Milton Lady Eagles (5-2)
Upcoming matches: vs. St. Stephen's & St. Agnes (0-0) on Friday; vs. Hinsdale Central (2-0) and American Heritage-Delray (9-0) on Saturday.
Notes: The defending-champion Lady Eagles host the annual Legacy Cup this weekend with St. Stephen's & St. Agnes coming from Virginia, American Heritage-Delray from Florida and Hinsdale Central from Illinois. American Heritage-Delray is ranked No. 2 in the USLacrosse Magazine South Girls' Top 10 and Milton is ranked No. 4. St. Stephen's & St. Agnes is ranked No. 9 in the National Girls' Top 25.
Blessed Trinity Lady Titans (8-1)
Upcoming matches: vs. 6A-7A No. 6 North Gwinnett (4-3) on Thursday.
Notes: The Lady Titans, who are coming off back-to-back state title seasons, are having another championship-caliber season so far. Their lone loss was 8-5 to 6A-7A's No. 4 Walton and they've beaten 6A-7A's No. 5 Kennesaw Mountain 12-11 and No. 3 Wesleyan 12-6, and dominated No. 2 Kell 16-2.
