Andy Mao of Johns Creek shot a 67 to earn medalist honors and help his team win the Region 6-AAAAAA title.

Nic Cassidy and Thomas Gerard each shot 72 and Calum Ross shot 75 for Johns Creek’s 286. That was one shot better than runner-up Alpharetta and two better than defending state champion Lambert.

Defending state champion Lambert girls won the Region 6-AAAAAA title behind a 66 from Lauren Lightfritz. Alpharetta was second behind a 69 from Alejandra Ayala.

Mill Creek sweeps: The Mill Creek boys and girls won the Region 7-AAAAAA golf tournaments and earned a spot in the state championships.

The boys were led by Jordan Smith, Luka Karaulic and Peter Chung, who each 71s. and Zach Mullett and Alex Markham, who each had 77s. Smith won medalist in a playoff.

and helped the team post a 290. The Hawks won by 30 shots over Collins Hill.

The Mill Creek girls shot a 227 and beat Peachtree Ridge by 19. Jenny Bae of Collins Hill was medalist with a 72.

Boys Tennis

They take their tennis serious in Region 6. In fact, all four boys teams from Region 6 (which is dominated by teams from the North Fulton area) swept their counterparts from Gwinnett County and Region 7 in the first round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs.

Region 6 No. 1 Johns Creek defeated Mill Creek 3-0. No. 2 Northview blanked Peachtree Ridge 3-0. No. 3 Chattahoochee beat Norcross 3-1. No. 4 Lambert defeated Region 7 champion North Gwinnett 3-1.

It was a bad experience for Gwinnett all around, as three of four Region 8 teams took a first-round exit thanks to Region 5. In the first round, Region 5 No. 1 Walton (the defending state champions) eliminated Dacula 3-0, No. 2 Etowah dumped Grayson 3-0 and No. 3 Woodstock ousted Brookwood 3-2. The only survivor was Region 8 No. 1 Parkview, which defeated Milton.

Class AAAAA: Lakeside-Evans, the No. 1 team from Region 2, opened the defense of their title with a 3-0 win over Statesboro. All the No. 1 seeds won their first-round matches.

Class AAAA: Reigning champion Marist, the Region 6 champion, opened the playoffs by beating Heritage Catoosa 3-0. Also winning from that region were St. Pius and Grady, with fourth-seeded Chamblee losing to Region 7 champion Cartersville 3-1. All region champions won their first-round matches.

Class AAA: Westminster, the defending state champion, opened with a 5-0 win over Islands. Each of the other seven region champions won their first-round match, too.

Class AA: Greater Atlanta Christian eliminated Coosa 4-1 in the first round to lead a sweep by Region 6 teams. Also victorious were Holy Innocents', the Region 6 champion, Lovett and Pace Academy, which eliminated Region 7 champion Darlington 3-1. All other No. 1 seeds won their first match.

Girls Tennis

Class AAAAAA: Walton, chasing its fourth straight championship, opened the playoffs with a 3-0 win over Dacula. Etowah, which beat the Raiders in the Region 5 final, blanked Grayson 3-0 in the first round.

The big winner was Region 4, which swept its first-round matches against Region 1. Region 4 champion Kennesaw Mountain beat Valdosta 4-1. No. 2 seed Marietta clipped Colquitt County 3-2. No. 3 seed North Cobb stopped Lowndes 4-1. No. 4 North Paulding upset Region 1 champion Tift County 3-2.

Class AAAAA: Cambridge rolled to a 5-0 win over Southwest DeKalb in the first round of its title defense. No first-round surprises, as each of the No. 1 seeds won their opening match.

Class AAAA: Woodward Academy had no trouble in opening the defense of its championship, beating Johnson of Gainesville 5-0. All No. 1 seeds won throughout the classification.

Class AAA: Defending state champion Blessed Trinity opens its title defense with a 4-1 win over Appling County. The remainder of the No. 1 seeds also won their opener.

Class AA: Wesleyan began defense of its state championship with a 3-0 win over Coosa. All top seeds won their opening matches.
