Tylan Morton set the state record for passing yards in a season on Friday, albeit in defeat.
The Griffin quarterback completed 31 of 46 attempts for 427 yards and five touchdowns in a 41-34 loss to Stockbridge in the Class AAAAA quarterfinals.
Morton finished with 4,741 yards passing, surpassing the record of Lassiter’s Hutson Mason, who threw for 4,560 yards in 2009. Morton was 303-of-435 on the season. He threw 42 TD passes.
Morton threw for over 400 yards in three games, peaking at 510 with seven touchdowns in a 52-49 loss to Starr’s Mill on Sept. 30. Morton had five TD passes in a game three times.
Morton is the fifth Georgia player to throw for more than 4,000 yards in a season. Others were Deshaun Watson of Gainesville, Taylor Heinicke of Collins Hill and Jake Fromm of Houston County.
Morton is not yet heavily recruited despite his size - 6-foot-4, 170 pounds - although things should pick up quickly. Morton is a first-year starter who had limited film to pass out during last off-season, when college teams do most of their evaluation.
Griffiin offensive coordinator Rex Robertson says Morton's arm strength is major Division I-calibre. ''[He] ''can throw it a mile. He has the ability on hitch routes to get the ball there faster where kids can do something with it.’’
