Morgan County is the new No. 1 girls basketball team in Class AAA after Beach, the previous No. 1, lost to Johnson-Savannah on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs beat Franklin County 60-46 and Salem 65-24 during the week to improve to 14-3 and increase their winning streak to seven games. Morgan County is 6-0 in Region 8-AAA, a half-game ahead of second-ranked Jefferson, and meets No. 5 Hart County on Tuesday in another key region matchup. The Bulldogs lost to Haralson County in the second round of the playoffs last year but were semifinalists in 2017 and state champions in 2016.

Johnson, the defending state champion, moved up two spots to No. 3 on the strength of its 55-42 win over Beach, which dropped to No. 4. The two Savannah schools have met in the state finals the past two years, with each team winning once. The teams have split their two meetings this season. Beach won 55-53 in overtime on Nov. 27.

The other seven top-ranked teams remained the same. They are Westlake in Class AAAAAAA, Lovejoy in AAAAAA, Buford in AAAAA, Carver-Columbus in AAAA, Dodge County in AA, Wesleyan in Class A private and Marion County in Class A public. Westlake, Lovejoy, Buford and Wesleyan are defending state champions.

The biggest mover of the week was Veterans, which climbed five spots to No. 3 in Class AAAAA after a 58-49 victory over previous No. 3 Harris County on Tuesday in a game that put the Warhawks in sole possession of first place in Region 1-AAAAA. Veterans also beat Warner Robins 71-65 and Thomas County Central to improve to 17-2 overall and 4-0 in the region.

Glynn Academy (17-2) made a big move in Class AAAAAA, climbing four spots to No. 6 after losses by the four teams directly ahead of it – Stephenson, Dacula, Sequoyah and New Manchester.

Wesleyan had the most impressive win when it beat North Cobb 59-38 Saturday in the Krossover Classic at Archer. Wesleyan improved to 19-0 for the season and handed North Cobb (17-1), the No. 4 team in AAAAAAA, its first loss.
