The Georgia High School Association’s investigation that resulted in eight forfeits levied against Marietta High’s football team has now cost the boys track and field team all of its wins in 2018, Marietta City Schools has confirmed.
Marietta’s boys team won the Region 3-AAAAAAA track-and-field championship last spring and finished seventh at the state meet in Rome.
The GHSA earlier this month ruled that two student athletes, both starters on the 2017 football team and members of the track team, attended the high school under false pretenses during the 2017-18 academic year and should have been ineligible because they failed to make a bona-fide change of residence.
The GHSA found that the school filed false transfer records and fined Marietta a total of $1,500. Marietta athletics director Paul Hall resigned in the aftermath, the Marietta Daily Journal reported.
Marietta has appealed the forfeits. GHSA officials declined comment on what remains an ongoing investigation, which also involves allegations of illegal recruiting.
Mariettta’s football team, which opens its season Aug. 16 against Rome, is expected to be a top contender this season in AAAAAAA. Marietta reached the state quarterfinals last season, its deepest run since 1994. The football team has several major college recruits.
