Jefferson is looking more and more like a state contender each week.
The Dragons won again on Friday, beating North Hall 48-8, to run its record to 3-0 for the first time since 2011.
No. 5 Jefferson has an outstanding quarterback in Evan Shirreffs, who threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns to avenge last year’s 41-34 loss to the Trojans. Shirreffs connected with T.J. Skelton for 130 yards and all three scores.
Shiffeffs’ older brother, Bryant, was the quarterback of the last team that began the season 3-0. He led the team to the state championship in 2012 and is now playing at UConn.
Here’s what else we learned this week:
Westside is solid at running back: Cedric Hollingshed had another good week running the ball for the No. 10-ranked Seminoles. He rushed 23 times for 160 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-29 win over Harris County. He was at the center of a six-minute scoring drive in the fourth quarter that put Westside ahead for good.
The Westside defense came up with some big plays, too. Devantae Smith had a sack for a safety and Marquez Sanford returned an interception 24 yards for a touchdown.
Peach County still owns Perry: The No. 6 Trojans turned running back Keyshawn Johnson loose for 152 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-12 win over their neighboring rival.
Washington County still rules Mary Persons: The No. 1-ranked Golden Hawks scored their biggest margin of victory in the series, a 31-0 victory. Quarterback A.J. Gray threw for 232 yards and ran for 104 yards to lead the Washington County offense.
It was the eighth straight win in the series for Washington County. The two old rivals were playing for the first time since 2004.
Blessed Trinity steps up in class and wins: The No. 3-ranked Titans scored quickly and methodically in a 35-14 win over Class AAAAA Sequoyah. The Titans scored once on a 76-yard drive that needed four plays and later on an 81-yard drive that took a clock-crunching 19 plays. Milton Shelton had a couple of touchdowns for the Titans.
Westminster wins on the road: The No. 9 Wildcats built on last week's emotional win over Lovett by venturing to Augusta and beating Laney 14-6. Quarterback Rankin Woley rushed for an 11-yard touchdown in the third quarter to lead the Cats to the winning score. Isaiah Malcome rushed 15 times for 85 yards to lead Westminster.
The other score came from the defense when senior Hal Silcox recovered a fumble in the end zone. It was one of three fumbles recovered by Westminster.
Calhoun rounds back into form: The No. 2 Yellow Jackets, who struggled last week against Dalton, came out strong on both sides of the ball and blasted Class AAAA No. 8 Carrollton 34-0.
Calhoun limited Carrollton only 30 yards rushing and 129 total yards. The Yellow Jackets moved it at will, even once driving 99 yards for a touchdown, and picked up a defensive score.
Bump in the road for Cedar Grove: The No. 4 Saints, who looked so good last week against Southwest DeKalb, got shut down by Class AAAAA Columbia 22-0. It was the first time Cedar Grove has been shutout since 2007 by Mays.
