Friday rewind: St. Pius stunner; Running back explodes for monster game
--St. Pius X moved into the driver’s seat in Region 6-AAAA with a stunning 10-9 upset over previously unbeaten Marist. Michael Matthew kicked the winning 30-yard field goal with 20 seconds left to lead the Golden Lions (4-2, 4-0 6-AAAA) to their third straight win over the rival War Eagles. St. Pius defensive lineman Chris Benjamin led a defensive effort that limited Marist (6-1, 4-1 6-AAAA) to 186 rushing yards and a season-low in points. The War Eagles entered the game averaging 33.7 points. Benjamin had nine tackles and forced a fumble.
--Pickens running back Shannon Brooks racked up 399 yards, 301 on the ground, and seven touchdowns in the Dragons’ 62-40 win over Southeast Whitfield. Brooks scored six rushing touchdowns and had four catches for 98 yards and a touchdown reception.
--Woodward Academy quarterback Jes Sutherland accounted for five touchdowns in the War Eagles’ 42-24 win over Troup. Sutherland completed 18 of 24 passes for 316 yards, including touchdown passes to Jeffery Hubbard, Jacob Robertson and two to Joshua Johnson. Sutherland also scored on a 1-yard run.
--Fayette County defeated Carrollton for the first time in eight meetings. Montrell Kelley scored three touchdowns for the Tigers in a 33-7 win over the struggling Trojans.
