In the Class AA game of the week, the top-ranked Benedictine Cadets went on the road and beat the Swainsboro Tigers 30-18 in the Region 2 opener for both schools. The Cadets moved to 4-0 while the Tigers drop to 3-1 in a game that could have very well decided the region's No. 1 seed.

Both teams were playing after a limited practice week thanks to Tropical Storm Irma closing their schools.

The game was a lot closer than last year's 47-8 Cadets win and certainly closer than the 34-point Benedictine win that Maxwell projected. Savannah Morning News has the recap here and describes it as a one-score game the entire way until Travis Blackshear's pick-six inside the final minute clinched the Cadets' win.

Here’s how the rest of the top 10 faired:

  • The No. 3 Screven County Gamecocks made easy work of Butler, winning 50-0 to improve to 3-0. WTOC has the highlights here .
  • The No. 5 Callaway Cavaliers beat Upson-Lee 40-20 and are 4-0. According to the LaGrange Daily News' Kevin Eckleberry, Kedrick Ramsey threw a 50-yard touchdown to Jacob Freeman on the game's first play and the Cavs never looked back.
  • The No. 6 Thomasville Bulldogs dominated Worth County 76-20 and are 4-0 for the first time since 1989 according to Clint Thompson, who has the game story for the Times-Enterprise  here .
  • The No. 7 Brooks County Trojans shut out Pierce County 31-0 to move to 3-0. The Trojans posted 364 yards of offense to Pierce County's 42, with the defense allowing just three first downs according to the The Valdosta Daily Times .
  • The No. 8 Jefferson County Warriors beat Laney 65-19 to move to 4-0. The first play of the game was a CJ Hales 63-yard pass to Ty King for a touchdown and the Warriors rolled from there.
  • The No. 9 Dodge County Indians beat Dooly County 70-27 and are 3-0.
  • The No. 10 Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane (1-3) were scheduled to play Rockdale but, because of weather, the game was postponed until October 7 .
