Here’s what went down Friday night:
Four ranked teams upsetFour top 10 teams went down Friday. No. 3 (Private) Athens Academy (5-0, 1-0 in Region 8-South) got an 18-yard touchdown pass from Palmer Bush to Kurt Kinsley with 42 seconds left to stun No. 2 (Private) Prince Avenue Christian, 31-27.
Unranked Claxton (4-1, 1-0 in Region 3-Division A) jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead over No. 7 (Private) Savannah Country Day (4-1, 0-1), then put the game away in the fourth with 19 unanswered points for a 32-10 win. Leading the way for the Tigers was Shakari Denson who had an interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter and a touchdown reception in the fourth.
Both 10th-ranked team were beaten as well. On the private side, Darlington rallied from a 21-16 fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Christian Heritage, 24-21. Frank Manning hit Casey Gunn with an 18-yard touchdown pass to provide the winning margin. On the public side, Macon Count lost a shootout to Dooly County, 46-40.
Mt. Zion, Mt. Paran reboundNo. 7 (Public) Mt. Zion-Carrollton and No. 9 (Private) Mt. Paran Christian both rebounded from tough loses last week. Mt. Zion shut out Trion, 28-0, on the strength of two touchdowns by Breon Henderson – a 15-yard reception just before halftime and a 64-yard run in the fourth quarter. Mt. Paran got 197 yards rushing and four touchdowns from Jack Allen to roll over Mt. Pisgah, 46-21. The Eagles led 33-7 at halftime.
George Walton still unbeatenNo. 8 (Private) George Walton (6-0, 1-0 in Region 8-Division A) is off to its best start since joining the Georgia High Schools Association in 2010, after a 42-7 win over Providence Christian. After a scoreless first quarter, George Walton led 21-0 at the half, before tacking on 21 more points in the third quarter. The win sets up a huge game next week when No. 2 (Private) Athens Academy visits the Bulldogs.
Both No. 1s rollJunior running back Keaton Mitchell scored three touchdowns and senior quarterback Braydon Rush ran for two touchdowns and threw two more as No. 1 (Private) Eagle's Landing Christian Academy (5-1, 3-0 in Region 5) handed Wesleyan (2-4, 2-1) its worst loss in program history, 63-0.
Meanwhile No. 1 (Public) Irwin County (6-0, 3-0 in Region 2) hammered No. 5 (Public) Charlton County, 46-20.
