GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.
Bryan Lamar, Tucker
1. What is the most memorable game you've been a part of as a player or coach? "Beating Marist for our first state championship [2008]. It was a mountain we'd been trying to climb forever. We had a really good team the year before and lost to Northside [Warner Robins] in the semifinals after we were up 28-7 at halftime. We just ran out of gas. The next year, we had lost a ton of guys and played Marist, and they just killed us in the regular season [38-0]. Our kids just kept working every week. We marched through the playoffs, just one win after another, kept chipping away. We had a chance to play Marist again for the state championship. It was a really good win [15-3]." [Lamar was an assistant to Franklin Stephens that season and succeeded him as head coach in 2012.]
2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why? "I'll make that easy and say Keith Maloof. I played for Coach Maloof when he was at Tucker. He's at Norcross now and still does a great job. He does a good job with football, but he taught me about life and competing and preparation. Those are all the things that helped me become the player I was and the coach that I am today. I'd love for my son to play for Coach Maloof."
3. What is your pet peeve as a coach or favorite saying/motto? "I'm always telling my guys to 'get after it.' I want them to compete in everything they're doing. Get after it in the game, get after it in practice, get after it in the classroom."
4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed? "I wish we had some kind of instant replay. It's not feasible at the high school level, but I sure wish we had it. We've had so many instances where if we had a camera or had a different view that the result of the game would've been different. I just wish we could give officials another look because sometimes they miss things on the fly."
