GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.
Gordon Powers, Model
1. What is the most memorable game you've been a part of as a player or coach? "My most memorable game as a player was at Austin Peay in 1977, clinching the OVC championship in our last game vs. East Tennessee. I made an interception on the last play of the game. Sid Fritts at Elbert County, Mark Daniel at Rutland and Andy McCollum at Georgia Tech were very good players on that team."
2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why?"So many coaches have influenced my life. Makes it hard to pick one. The three teammates mentioned above would be on my list. All three of my sons played for me. I wished they could have played for my dad. Their grandfather was a very successful coach in high school and later at Alabama with Bear Bryant. Stan Gann, the former coach at Northside Warner Robins, would be a great choice. Also, Danny Wiseman, who I took over for at Model in 2003, is a man with almost zero ego and has a great temperament and skill communicating with young men." [Gordon's father, Clayton Powers, was an Alabama assistant coach under from 1966 to 1970. Gordon Powers owns one of Bryant's houndstooth hats, a gift from his father, and his middle name is Bryant.]
3. What is your pet peeve as a coach or favorite saying/motto?"Our motto at Model has been 'No Fear.' It means play loose, all out, not worrying about mistakes, playing ahead, not looking back. Fear can prevent you from doing what should be done, on and off the field."
4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed?"I would like the GHSA to be able to enforce many of the rules by using investigators, maybe retired coaches, to go observe reported illegal practices, recruiting, transfers, etc. I think it would really slow down the desire to break a rule if you know someone was watching and checking."
