GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.
Mike Brown, Commerce
1. What is the most memorable game you've been a part of as a player or coach?"The 2000 Class A state championship game between Commerce and Buford. It was my second year here at Commerce as the offensive-line coach. The game was a rematch of Region 8-A opponents and a fitting finale to the seniors at Commerce led by Monte Williams and Michael Collins. The 27-19 win was sealed in the fourth quarter with a pick by junior Kyle Moore to give Commerce its second state title." [Brown played at Commerce in the 1990s.]
2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why?"Steve Savage or Ray Lamb. Both men knew how to get the most out of their players and both men believed in playing the game with toughness and character. Great coaches and even better men!" [Commerce won its 1981 state championship under Lamb and the 2000 title under Lamb's successor, Savage.]
3. What is your favorite saying/motto?"When we all start thinking alike, we will have a team. Until then, we are a group of individuals."
4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed?"It would seem that the rules and limits placed on contact during the practice week should be reviewed and relaxed some. In some ways, the restrictions limit our ability to teach the necessary skills of blocking, tackling and running. At the same time, I believe that the health of our players should be first and foremost in any discussion of contact."
