Bob Herring, a coach who revived Newnan football and led the Cougars to three region titles and two state semifinal appearances, died Wednesday morning in his native Alabama. He was 79.

Herring came to Newnan in 1999 after a successful career in Alabama, where he had won three state titles at Oxford High. Newnan hadn’t made the playoffs in seven seasons but advanced in Herring’s first.

In 2003, Newnan reached its first state semifinal in 22 years. Newnan advanced to the semifinals again in 2008, Herring’s final season at Newnan, with future Georgia and NFL player Alec Ogletree.

Herring then retired with a 273-131-4 record as a high school coach, according to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society. He was inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2001.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Saks First Baptist Church in Aniston, Ala. Visitation will be Friday evening.
