Peach County and Cedar Grove played the tightest state final in 2018 when Cedar Grove won 14-13 on a fourth-down touchdown pass in the final seconds. All indications are that the two are the Class AAA teams to beat again, even if Cedar Grove lost Saturday night.

Peach County, ranked No. 1 despite losing in the finals the past two seasons, defeated No. 4 Northside-Warner Robins 21-13 to open its season Saturday night.

Cedar Grove, ranked No. 2, lost to Central of Phenix City, Ala., 24-21. Central is Alabama’s reigning Class 7A champion.

The rest of AAA has work to do to close the gap as previous No. 5 Lovett and No. 6 Pace Academy each lost, 49-0, Lovett to Marist and Pace to Eagle's Landing Christian. Crisp County and Westminster also were beaten in AAA. Seven current or past top-10 AAA teams have lost in the first two weeks.

And Peach County might be next. Peach is home next week to Lee County, the No. 1 team in AAAAAA.
