The state tennis tournaments have started, with each of the defending champions in the field with a chance to repeat.

Here's a look at who last year's winners will meet in the first round of the playoffs.

Boys

Class AAAAAA: Defending champion Walton opens the playoffs with a match against Dacula. The Raiders beat Etowah 3-2 in the Region 5 championship match.

Class AAAAA: Lakeside-Evans will meet Statesboro in the first round of the playoffs. Lakeside defeated Houston County in the Region 2 championship match.

Class AAAA: Marist beat rival St. Pius in the Region 6 championship match. The War Eagles will open the playoffs against Heritage Catoosa.

Class AAA: Westminster opens defense of its state championship against Islands. The Wildcats emerged from a tough Region 4 by beating Blessed Trinity in the region final.

Class AA: Greater Atlanta Christian begins its title defense as the No. 3 seed from Region 8 and will play at Coosa in the first round of the state playoffs. The two teams who finished ahead of the Spartans were Holy Innocents' and Lovett, which finished one-two in the region tournament.

Girls

Class AAAAAA: Walton begins the quest to win its fourth straight championship with a first-round match against Dacula. The Raiders have won 13 of the last 15 championships in the highest level of competition, but they won't be the favorite. That role may belong to Etowah, which beat Walton for the Region 5 championship.

Class AAAAA: Cambridge begins defense of its title with a first-round match against Southwest DeKalb. The Bears won the Region 7 championship for the second straight year and did not drop a region line all season.

Class AAAA: Woodward Academy starts defense of its championship against Johnson of Gainesville. The War Eagles beat Carrollton in the Region 5 championship game.

Class AAA: Defending state champion Blessed Trinity opens the playoffs against Appling County. The Titans won the Region 4-AAA championship with a 3-2 win over Westminster.

Class AA: Wesleyan begins defense of its state championship with a match against Coosa. The Wolves enter the playoffs as the No 2 seed from Region 6, having lost to Pace Academy in the championship match.

Golf notes

Johns Creek and won the West Forsyth Invitational at the Polo Fields Golf Club in Cumming. The Wolverines shot 293 and beat Lambert by seven shots. … Gainesville’s Spencer Ralston shot an 8-under 64 at the Achasta Golf Club in a match against St. Pius. … The Glynn Academy girls won the Lady Bear Invitational in Blackshear, shooting 124 to beat Vidalia by four shots.
