Walter Chadwick, a former all-state football player at Decatur High who starred on Tennessee’s 1967 SEC championship team that played in the Orange Bowl, died Thursday morning. Chadwick is an older brother of Marist football coach Alan Chadwick, who confirmed his death.

Walter Chadwick rushed for 1,306 yards in his Tennessee career and led the SEC in touchdowns with 11 in 1967. He was drafted in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers and played a season for Winnipeg in the CFL.

Chadwick returned to Georgia had been head football coach for two weeks at Wills High in Smyrna in 1971 when involved in an automobile accident that caused a permanent brain injury affecting his motor skills. Chadwick was was remembered by his alma mater in 2013 when Tennessee named its Running Backs Meeting Room in Chadwick’s honor.

Walter’s younger brothers Dennis and Alan also became all-state players at Decatur and in college. Alan Chadwick ranks second in victories among Georgia high school coaches with 384.

Walter Chadwick was 73.
