ALBANY
Marion County’s Ansley Whitley continued her domination in the girls Class A-Public discus competition, throwing for 139-00 to take home back-to-back golds in the event. Model’s Ellie Getchell scored a 10-00.00 in the AA girls pole vault, defeating last year’s winner Perryn Morgan from Rabun County. Pelham dominated in the girls A-Public shot put. Krystian Jones (37-02.00) placed first, while Kenjanai Brown (36-04.50), who placed first last year, was runner-up. After placing fifth in last year’s AA triple jump, Monroe’s Isis McVay skyrocketed to first place with a score of 38-09.5. After completing seven events in girls A-Public, AA and AAA, the respective leaders in those classes are Pelham (35), Bleckley County (20.5) and Monroe (38.5).
ROME
Darlington’s Elijah Ball broke through for first place in this year’s Class A-Private boys discus competition. Last year, Ball placed second in the event behind Athens Academy’s Paul Mullinax. Ball would go on to take first place this year with a mark of 158-10, while Mullinax placed third with 153-01. Thomas Martin brought home gold for Jefferson, moving up from last year’s second-place finish to take the AAAA boys pole vault with a try of 14-00.00. Tiondra Grant of Columbus failed to place top five during last year’s AAAA girls shot put. This year, she finished strong for a first-place performance with a throw of 39-04.00. Campbell had two competitors place in the AAAAAAA girls triple jump. Rachel Robertson (39-06.00) placed second while Jada Alston (38-08.00) finished third. With four field events finished in the A-Private competition, Athens Academy leads with 29 points.
CARROLLTON
Fayette County’s boys 4x100 meter relay team, composed of Zachary Filmore, Trey Johnson, Josh Dupree and Seth Holloway, placed first in the preliminaries with a time of 41.33. Last year’s first-place Cedar Shoals team lost three of its four members from that team, but returning runner Ashton Daniel helped the team place second with a time of 41.34. Buford’s Kimberly Harris backed up her first-place finish last year in the AAAAA girls 400-meter dash by placing first in this year’s prelims with a time of 54.20. Veterans Shaianne Sipsey, who was runner-up to Harris last year in the same event, placed second with a time of 55.13. Cedar Shoals' Ashton Daniel placed second in last year’s AAAAA boys 110-meter hurdles. Daniel came out of the preliminaries on top with a time of 14.32, besting Dutchtown’s Kameron Jones by .01. Allatoona’s Jacob Smith maintained control of the AAAAAA boys 200-meter dash after claiming gold at last year’s championship meet. Smith placed first in the prelims with a time of 21.26, besting last year’s first place-time by 0.16.
