Here’s what went down in Week 5:
Holy Innocents’ takes down ELCA
Holy Innocents' ended Eagle’s Landing Christian’s streaks of 59 straight victories in region games (fourth-longest in state history) and 41 consecutive wins against Class A opponents, with a 42-41 overtime win. ELCA, a 36-point favorite in the game. Holy Innocents' trailed 28-14 in the third quarter, but took a 35-28 lead midway through the fourth quarter on one of four touchdown runs by junior RB Michael Cox, who ran for 214 yards and four touchdowns on 40 carries. But ELCA tied the game and sent it into overtime on a 73-yard touchdown reception and run by senior RB Keaton Mitchell, who had 194 yards rushing, 356 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns on the night. In OT, the teams traded touchdowns, with the Bears scoring first. Holy Innocents’ converted its point after kick, while the Chargers missed, setting off a raucous celebration by the home crowd. With the win, Holy Innocents’ rocketed up from No. 10 to No. 2 in the private school Top 10, while ELCA fell from No. 1 to No. 3. The Chargers remain No. 1 in the private power ratings while Holy Innocents sits at No. 10.
Irwin County beats Clinch County, again, in the regular season
Irwin County and Clinch County switched places in the public school Top 10, as Irwin moved into the top spot after a 14-0 win. It is the third consecutive time Irwin has defeated Clinch in the regular season. Each time, however, Clinch has come back to win in the state title game. Irwin scored on Gabriel Benyard's 78-yard run in the second quarter and JyQuez Marshall's 70-yard fumble return in the fourth. Irwin intercepted three of Clinch's four passing attempts, and the other fell incomplete. Irwin had 225 yards rushing and led in total yards 303-165. Clinch was shut out for the first time since 2014. QB Tyler Morehead rushed for 80 yards on 24 carries.
NCC shuts out Trion in private/public top 10 battle
North Cobb Christian moved up to No. 8 in the private school top 10 while Trion slipped two spots to No. 9 in the public poll after NCC’s 24-0 win. It was the second consecutive season the Eagles have beaten the Bulldogs. NCC took a 14-0 lead into halftime after an 11-play, 78-yard drive (Ryan Pruitt TD on 16-yard run) and a three-play, 66-yard drive (Pruitt TD on 46-yard reception). Trion had 255 yards of total offense but couldn’t score. The Bulldogs’ best scoring threat was ended by Levi Brown's third-quarter interception after a 15-play drive.
Calvary Day goes 1-1 in five-day stretch
No. 10 Calvary Day beat Treutlen 42-6 in its second game in five days. The Cavaliers fell to Class AAA Island last Monday, 42-21, in a game that was to have been played on Sept. 6, but was moved due to Hurricane Dorian. Treutlen had been 3-0 for the first time since 2009. Calvary Day RB Greg Daniel ran for 180 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries.
Lincoln County jumps into top 10 despite loss to Aquinas
No. 10 Lincoln County is the only school in the top 10 with two loses, including a 10-7 decision to No. 7 (private) Aquinas on Friday. The Red Devils’ other loss was to the No. 1 team in South Carolina’s Class AA, Abbeville, also by the score of 10-7. For Aquinas, A.J. Williams rushed for 83 yards on 13 carries and scored on a 29-yard run early in the fourth quarter for the final margin. The Red Devils were led by Kolbi Ferguson, who rushed for 167 yards and a touchdown.
