Grayson’s boys basketball team, now ranked No. 6 nationally by MaxPreps’ Xcellent 25, has emphatically avenged its only defeat and now heads to Ohio and Virginia for some national competition.
Grayson beat ninth-ranked Newton 86-39 at home Tuesday night. Newton is the only team that has beaten Grayson this season. That game took place Nov. 10. Newton won 84-80. Grayson (17-1) has won nine straight since.
Grayson plays Archer on Thursday, then travels for a pair of weekend showcases in Ohio and Virginia.
Grayson will play Wayne of Huber Heights, Ohio, on Saturday at the Flyin’ to the Hoop event in Dayton. Then on Monday, Grayson will play Crestwood Prep, a Canadian team, in the Kevin Durant MLK Showcase outside of Washington, D.C.
Here are other comings and goings among some of Class AAAAAAA’s top boys basketball programs:
*Second-ranked Norcross (18-2) also will be in the Kevin Durant MLK event but will play Saturday against Rock Creek Christian, the 10th-best overall team in Maryland, according to MaxPreps. Norcross will be the host school for the Peachtree Corners Invitational on Jan. 25. Grayson, Hughes, Campbell and Pacelli will be there. Norcross holds a three-game lead with three to play in Region 6.
*No. 3 Shiloh (18-1) will play No. 2 Eagle’s Landing of Class AAAAA on Monday at the MLK Dream Challenge at Jackson High in Atlanta. Shiloh – which defeated No. 8 Archer 59-57 on Tuesday - trails Grayson in Region 8 and gets a rematch against the Rams on Jan. 24.
*No. 4 Milton (15-3) will be in Dayton with Grayson on Saturday and play Pickerington North, an 11-3 team out of the Columbus, Ohio, area. Milton has opened a two-game lead in Region 5.
*No. 5 McEachern is playing the No. 1-ranked team nationally – Montverde Academy of Florida – on Saturday in the Hoopball Classic in Massachusetts. Montverde is 17-0 and has three of the top-10 senior prospects in the country, according to 247Sports. They are Scot Barnes (Florida State), Jalen Johnson (Duke) and Cade Cunningham (Oklahoma State). McEachern has point guard Sharife Cooper (Auburn).
