Class AAAAAA blog: Where teams stand in final week of regular season

ajc.com

The wintry weather that came through north Georgia on Tuesday has caused some reshuffling of the Class AAAAAA basketball schedule this week, but one way or another, the regular season is still scheduled to come to a close Saturday night.

Up next will be the region tournaments next week, followed by the state tournament, which begins Feb. 15.

Lanier of Region 8 is the only school in the classification that enters the final week of the season with both its boys and girls teams in first place. The Longhorns’ boys are 16-6 overall and 8-0 in the region, a game ahead of Gainesville, which plays at Lanier on Friday. Top-ranked Coffee is the only other boys team that is undefeated in region play, leading Region 1 with a 6-0 mark (20-2 overall).

Lanier’s sixth-ranked girls team is 20-3 overall and 8-0 in the region, leading second-place Winder-Barrow with two games remaining. Other girls teams that are undefeated in region play are No. 4 Valdosta (20-2 overall, 6-0 in Region 1), Heritage-Conyers (14-5, 8-0 in Region 3), top-ranked Lovejoy (20-3, 14-0 in Region 4), No. 5 Douglas County (19-4, 14-0 in Region 5), and No. 3 Northview (20-4, 15-0 in Region 7).

Here’s a look at the region standings going into Tuesday’s games (with region records, followed by overall records). Note that the records are taken from MaxPreps, the official record-keeper for the Georgia High School Association, and that some of those records have not been fully updated.
