It’ll be another eventful weekend of region matchups and a few intriguing cross-classification matchups between top 10 teams. Here’s a look ahead to the top games on the Friday and Saturday slate.
On Friday, the Columbus boys will take on defending champion Carver-Columbus in the Region 1-AAAA rivals second meeting this season. Carver-Columbus jumped to a 19-8 lead after the opening quarter and scored a 67-52 victory in the Dec. 17 meeting. Ja’Cyais Credle (18), Sebian Tate (14), Devin Riles (11) and Ja’Corey Harper (10) each finished in double-figure scoring in the victory.
Top-ranked Woodward Academy remains the front-runner in Region 3-AAAA, but there are several teams below the War Eagles in the standings that are in a battle for favorable seeding in the region tournaments. Eastside (16-3, 7-2) will be visiting North Clayton (12-5, 5-4) on Friday night to play this season’s second meeting. Eastide won 80-71 back on Dec. 7 despite a 41-point effort by North Clayton senior Jermaine Lattimore.
On Saturday, undefeated Americus-Sumter will look to defeat the defending champion Carver-Columbus Tigers for a second time in the past week on the road. The Panthers steamrolled Carver 67-38 last weekend and are 17-0 heading into Saturday’s rematch.
On the girls side, the McDonough girls will be looking to avenge a 70-59 loss to Luella on Dec. 6 when they host the Lions on Friday. McDonough enters the matchup with a 10-8 overall record and 6-4 mark in Region 3-AAAA. Luella is 15-5 overall and 8-2 in region play heading into the matchup.
The Stephens County girls are hosting Madison County Friday night for a Region 8-AAAA contests. Stephens County scored an 87-75 win over Madison County when the two teams met on Dec. 13, but a 43-37 loss to Oconee County last week contributed to the Indians’ 3-1 record. Madison County is also 3-1 in region play and is coming off a big 63-41 win over St. Pius this past Tuesday.
On Saturday, undefeated Americus-Sumter will get another chance to battle the defending champion Carver-Columbus Lady Tigers. The Panthers, which missed out of the playoffs last season, are 16-0 overall and 9-0 in Region 1-AAAA heading into Saturday’s matchup and scored a 58-53 win over Carver when the teams met this past Friday.
