This weekend will be home to some major region matchups for the classification’s top girls teams. Here’s a look ahead to the top games to be watching for.

In Region 1-AAAA, defending state champion Carver-Columbus is going to travel to Americus-Sumter to take on a red-hot Panthers team. Carver, which won the state championship with a perfect 33-0 record last season, is 12-3 heading into the matchup with a perfect 7-0 start in Region 1-AAAA. Americus-Sumter is currently 13-0 with a 6-0 Region 1-AAAA record. This incredible start is following a 2018-19 season that saw the Panthers miss out on the playoffs with an 11-15 record and a win over the Tigers Friday night would be a significant boost of confidence heading into the final weeks of the regular season for them.

Region 2-AAAA will have its own prime matchup to watch Friday night between Spalding and Upson-Lee. Both teams are 12-4 overall with 3-0 region records heading into the 6 p.m. tipoff.

Cross Creek scored a 67-61 win over Thomson this past Tuesday in its Region 3-AAAA debut and improved its overall record to 13-4. The Razorbacks have a busy weekend ahead of them and will visit Richmond Academy on Friday before taking on a 9-4 Burke County team at home on Saturday.

Region 4-AAAA has several teams that appear to be contenders for this year’s top seed and Woodward Academy (15-1, 6-0), Luella (13-4, 6-1) and McDonough (9-6, 5-2) will all be facing off in the upcoming days. Woodward Academy visits Luella on Saturday and then hosts McDonough on Monday.

In Region 5-AAAA, Troup is taking a perfect 12-0 record and 2-0 region start into the weekend. The Lady Tigers will face LaGrange on Friday (7-9, 0-3) and will then visit Central-Carroll (14-2, 3-0) on Monday for a top 10 showdown.

Gilmer is leading the pack in Region 6-AAAA with a 12-5 overall start and a 7-0 region mark, but will not be back in action until this Monday when they host Heritage-Catoosa. In Region 7-AAAA, Marist has been dominant throughout its undefeated start (15-0, 6-0). The War Eagles pummeled Denmark 62-8 on Tuesday and will face Class AAA’s Greater Atlanta Christian on Friday before taking on Region 8-AAAA St. Pius on Saturday for a top 10 showdown. St. Pius (13-2, 1-1) is hosting North Oconee (12-6, 0-2) on Friday in region play.
