It was a non-descript weekend if you were looking for upsets at the top of Class AAA, but region champions are beginning to emerge with two weeks left in the regular season.
Three regions – 5-AAA, 7-AAA and 8-AAA – have been decided with five other regions still up for grabs.
Here's the breakdown:
Region 1: When Crisp beat Worth 43-0 and Cook beat Monroe 29-14, it set up a region title game Friday. Crisp and Cook are tied at 2-0 in the standings, and Crisp will travel to Cook Friday to determine the region champion.
Region 2: No. 5 Appling and No. 3 Pierce County are tied at 3-0 and will meet Friday at Pierce County to determine the front-runner in what should be the region championship game. Liberty County (5-1, 2-1) will face Brantley County (4-4, 1-2) on Friday and play Pierce County at home in the final game of the regular season. Any upset could shake up the standings in a number of directions.
Region 3: Jenkins is at the top of the standings at 7-0 after its 63-0 victory against Groves on Friday. The Warriors are entering a bye week before a showdown with Benedictine. The Cadets are 6-0 with two games left on the schedule – Friday vs. Beach and Nov. 8 against Jenkins in what should be the region title game.
Region 4: Peach County and Jackson are each 4-0 in the region, and the Trojans will play at home against Jackson on Friday in what will determine the front-runner in the standings. The Trojans then will face Westside-Macon in the final game of the regular season. The Seminoles are 3-1 in the standings behind Jackson and Peach.
Region 5: Cedar Grove locked up its third consecutive region championship with its victory against Pace on Friday. The Saints lead Westminster (3-1), Lovett (3-1) and Stone Mountain (2-2). Cedar Grove has won four of the last five region titles with two state championships in that span.
Region 6: No. 10 North Murray is on the cusp of capturing its first region title for a team that began playing football in 2009. The Mountaineers defeated Calhoun earlier in the season in a state-shaking upset and is leading the 6-AAA standings at 6-0. Calhoun and Haralson County are at 5-1 with Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe at 4-2. North Murray will travel to LFO on Friday. Calhoun needs to win out and hope North Murray loses its last two games to have a chance.
Region 7: With one game left on its regular-season schedule, Greater Atlanta Christian (5-0) already has locked up its region championship. North Hall and Dawson County each have two games left and are tied at 3-1 behind the Spartans. Fannin County is fourth in the standings at 2-2.
Region 8: No. 8 Jefferson outlasted Monroe Area 26-7 to lock up its first region championship since 2016 in 8-AAAA. Morgan County is at 3-1; Monroe Area is at 3-2, and Hart County is at 2-2 in the standings.
